While Newcastle recently signed Stoke City's Joselu for £5 million, Rafael Benitez is hoping to sign another striker during the transfer market.

Newcastle snapped up the Spanish striker to bolster Benitez's attacking options with the club heavily relying on Dwight Gayle.

The former Crystal Palace frontman bagged an impressive 23 league goals last season as Newcastle secured promotion back to the Premier League as champions.

Though Gayle only netted 15 top flight goals during his three season stint with Palace. So, needless to say, Benitez is actively pursuing more back-up before the window slams shut.

And it appears he's considering a former player. The Spanish manager is reportedly considering a sensational move for Andy Carroll via Mirror.

The 28-year-old is reportedly deemed surplus to requirement by Slaven Bilic at West Ham following his £15 million transfer from Liverpool.

Carroll, a proud Geordie, came through Newcastle's youth academy before breaking into the senior side in 2006.

While he played a bit part role in his first three seasons, Carroll was an ever present during their year in the Championship in 2009. Carroll weighed in with 17 goals which fired them back to the footballing promise land.

After returning to the Premier League, Carroll scored an impressive 11 goals in just 19 games which prompted Liverpool to splash £35 million to acquire his services.

Though his time at Anfield was miserable. He barely featured while plagued with injuries, which led to a loan move to West Ham before they eventually signed him on a permanent deal in 2013.

Odds have even slashed on him making an emotional return to St James Park. From 10/1 to just 3/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Newcastle have been relatively quite in the transfer window up to this point, but a move for Carroll could kick-start plenty of activity in the North East in the next 10 days or so," via The Shield Gazette.
