Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United and the Argentine manager is the club's number one target when they appoint a permanent manager.

Jose Mourinho's sacking caused panic and confusion in some places merely because no one was expecting it. We've got used to rumours and leaks happening ahead of such decisions these days but on Monday night most places were reporting that Jose wouldn't be sacked.

When it happened on Tuesday morning everyone was blindsided. It led to a wonderful moment on Sky Sports when they were interviewing Gary Neville on the phone, he sounded like he was still in bed, and two stories came out in a matter of minutes contradicting each other.

First Michael Carrick was going to be in charge of United till the end of the season and then they changed it to him being in charge of training until and external caretaker was appointed for the season, that came with added Carrick in charge for '38 hours' confusion on the live broadcast.

We now know that it's the second option at Old Trafford and the man who will take control for the rest of the season will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After that though it's not so simple. Mauricio Pochettino is the club's number one target according to reports and now the Times say that he is keen on being considered and would like the job.

Asked yesterday about his future Pochettino refused to rule out leaving Spurs, saying, "It is not my business if something happens in another club, like in many, many clubs around the world. I am happy here in Tottenham and I have four-and-a-half years left on my contract.

"Like always in football, no one can guarantee anything. What is going to happen in the summer? What is going to happen tomorrow? No one knows. The most important is to enjoy the journey. I'm so happy here, my focus and energy is in Tottenham."

It would be far from simple for the Red Devils to sign the former Southampton manager and they would likely have to folk out around £34 million to Spurs to sign him but considering the price of transfers that's not really too much.

Real Madrid are also targeting the former PSG defender but it's believed that he prefers a move to Old Trafford, especially as the job generally comes up less often.

Pochettino's attacking football and reputation for developing youth players into the first team fit perfectly with United's traditions, something Mourinho certainly failed with.

It could be a long few months for Spurs and their fans as they try to convince their manager to stay in north London.
