Manchester United Would Need To Pay £24 Million To Sack Jose Mourinho

Sacking Jose Mourinho seems to be the will of Manchester United fans right now but it seems unlikely as the club would have to pay out a lot of money to get rid of their manager.

Manchester United were listless, without direction and just all round rubbish on Sunday as they lost 3-1 to a Liverpool side who were far from their best.

It didn't really come as a surprise for either side. Liverpool have improved on last season and were top of the table before the weekend's games, and would be top after too, whilst United have been poor and well outside the top four.

Mourinho left Paul Pogba on the bench for the entire game whilst the decisions to bring on Juan Mata and Anthony Martial came too late to make any difference.

Most fans of the Red Devils would admit that the manager is far from the only problem with the team right now but many would like to see him leave before the end of the season.

Now would make sense for him to be sacked with the January transfer window looming and a chance to change things around at Old Trafford but that seems highly unlikely.

According to Duncan Castles, at The Record, the price to sack Mourinho now would be £24 million, dropping by 25% to £18 million should they terminate his contract when Champions League football for next season is no longer possible.

It is an eerily similar situation that United went through with both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, with both men only sacked after there was no chance of qualifying for the following season's Champions League.

Moyes was sacked with four games to go whilst Van Gaal was given until after the FA Cup final, in which he beat Crystal Palace.

In the season that Van Gaal was sacked he went through a worst spell in December than Mourinho is right now. The Red Devils lost four games in a row and were knocked out of the Champions League.

At the time Mourinho had just been sacked by Chelsea and the rumours were that he'd soon replace Van Gaal. In the end he had to wait till May.

The irony is the same reason Mourinho didn't get the job sooner is now keeping him in the job.
