Manchester United Face Prospect Of David De Gea Not Renewing His Contract

The Manchester United goalkeeper has been integral to the Premier League side in the last few years and would be a huge loss.

Manchester United may have looked to turn the corner with their comeback win on Saturday over Newcastle United but they could be met with a bump in the road over David de Gea's new contract.

Things at Old Trafford have not been good for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United in recent weeks. The club failed to win four games in a row over three competitions as Mourinho's relationship with several members of the squad reportedly fractured.

On Friday it was reported that the United boss would be sacked no matter the result of their game against Newcastle United on Saturday evening. When they trailed 2-0 at half time things looked bad but they did turn things around to win 3-2.

The problems at Old Trafford stretch far beyond Mourinho though and sacking him would only fix part of the problem, if they believe it would fix any of it of course.

Throughout the bad times since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 only one thing has been a constant good for the Red Devils, David de Gea's goalkeeping. Now though United could face life without him.

De Gea's contract ends in the summer, though United have a one year extension option, and the Spaniard is, according to the Telegraph, reluctant to sign on to stay past 2020.

The report says the former Atletico Madrid keeper wants to be winning major trophies and, despite FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League win in recent years, United simply aren't doing that.

Last season was the closest they've come to winning the league since Fergie and they were 19 points behind winners Manchester City, and they don't look like coming that close this time.

The decision seems to have something to do with the Mourinho situation with the 28 year old not willing to commit with the future of the side so up in the air.

If De Gea doesn't sign a new deal then the club would either have to sell him in the summer or lose him for free a year later.

The keeper has been the undoubted highlight of the team in the last five years, winning the club's player of the year award four of the five times.

Forget Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial or Mourinho the one person the team can't do without right now is De Gea.
