Despite splashing the cash this summer, Pep Guardiola is still hellbent on luring in more talent ahead of the window slamming shut.

Manchester City have shelled out an enormous amount of money on defensive talent during the close season.

From signing Kyle Walker from Spurs for £50 million to snapping up the services of AS Monaco's Benjamin Mendy for a reported £52 million.

Not to mention buying Real Madrid's Danilo as well as a new keeper in Ederson.

But Guardiola is hoping for more defensive reinforcement. The club recently lined up a surprising offer for ex-Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.

Though West Brom turned down City's advances while slapping a whopping £35 million price tag on the Northern Irish international.

And it appears the Spaniard has moved on. But reports suggest he's now plotting another move for a defender in the shape of Ben Gibson, according to several reports via Daily Mail.

Middlesbrough actually rejected West Brom's pursuit for Gibson during the market, but would the club stand in the way for a Champions League represented outfit?

The report claims the Championship side would prefer to sell their star player to a top four club having rebuffed two offers from Tony Pulis' West Brom.

The 24-year-old attracted plenty of interest last season during their Premier League campaign with Boro ultimately getting relegated. Though with the new season underway, the Riverside club still call upon his services.

Yet with West Brom unsuccessful with their bids, City will now test Boro's resolve as they're set to table a £20 million offer to provide back-up for his defence ahead of the season.
