The RB Leipzig midfielder is due to arrive in Merseyside in the summer but Liverpool's need for the player has been accelerated.

Just how do Liverpool fill the hole in their team left by the departed Philippe Coutinho? How about they start with a player they've already signed in the form of RB Leipzig's Naby Keita.

Having kept hold of the Brazilian last summer Liverpool were probably expecting to lose Philippe Coutinho this summer but instead his overwhelming desire to leave, and a lot of money from Barcelona, has seen him leave in January instead.

Whilst the Reds are still pretty stacked with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah as the remaining 'Fantastic Three,' their narrow victory over Everton on Friday hinted that they could miss Coutinho.

With so much money in his pocket and a clear gap in his squad that needs filling Jurgen Klopp will be furiously searching on Football Manager who to sign, or wondering if Southampton have anyone worth signing.

But according to the Telegraph the German is eyeing up a player he already knows a lot about. The paper report that Liverpool are hoping that RB Leipzig are willing to let go of Naby Keita go early ahead of his projected summer move, with the Reds willing to offer more money for that to happen.

The Premier League side chased the 22 year-old last summer but the Bundesliga side wouldn't let him go. However his release clause of £57 million allowed him to go in the summer of 2019 so the Reds matched it.

Leipzig's elimination from the Champions League means that Keita would prefer to move to Anfield now, rather than wait a few months, and help the Merseysiders to qualify for the competition again next season.

The Reds are wary of ruffling any feathers and will not try to force the issue but will make enquiries and are backed by the financial clout that has gone with selling Coutinho.

Liverpool won't want to overpay for any Coutinho replacements and with Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also able to play centrally there's a chance no one will replace the Brazilian until the summer.

Could Keita be the answer?
