Kevin de Bruyne has revealed he 'doesn't care' if Lionel Messi joins him at Manchester City next summer, with the Barcelona player likely to be available for free.

Messi looked set to leave Barca back in August when he revealed after the club's 7-2 hammering in the Champions League quarter final to Bayern Munich that he wanted to leave.

The six time Ballon d'Or tried to force a move away but was told he couldn't leave for free this summer so decided to stay put.

With his contract up next summer it would take an huge turnaround at the Nou Camp to keep him there beyond this season and City are favourites to sign him, as they were this summer.

However speaking this week De Bruyne revealed he's not too bothered, because of the talent City already have in their squad, saying, "I don't really care, to be honest.

"If he comes, it's a good thing, if he doesn't there is enough good players at the club who I enjoy playing with, so that is not for now."

City do have plenty of excellent players, with De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling all making for an impressive line up of attacking midfielders.

However Pep Guardiola's side have been lacking in options up front in recent weeks, with both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus missing from the team.

The recent 5-2 loss to Leicester City and 1-1 draw with Leeds United both came without either of their strikers upfront and one of the other forwards having to fill in as a 'false nine.'

It isn't exactly a 'hot take' to suggest that Messi would be a good signing for City and they remain one of the few clubs who could afford his wages.

The club's Chief Operating Officer Omar Berrada, certainly didn't pour cold water on the prospect of a reunion between Messi and Guardiola. He's an amazing talent, he's somebody that can make a significant impact at any club in the world on and off the pitch immediately," Berrada told the Manchester Evening News.

"He's the best player in the world, he's the best player of his generation.I think any club in the world would like to explore the possibility of him joining their team.

"The fact that it was commented that he wanted to come to play for City just shows you how far the team has come over the last years where the best talent of his generation potentially saying he wants to come and play for us."

It seems like the club cares a little more about the signing than De Bruyne.
