Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has poured cold water on rumours that Marouane Fellaini is to leave the club.

The big Belgian has been strongly linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray of late, with Galatasaray's Sporting Director Cenk Ergun revealing, via Turkish Football, that a deal was close for the Europa League winning midfielder.

"There will be surprises, we are in talks with Fellaini.

"We have made an approach, we are close and if we get Fellaini we will end our pursuit of N'Diaye.

"We need a player like Fellaini who can shuttle around in midfield."

Despite the ongoing speculation, the former Everton man started for the Red Devils in the 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Valerenga in Oslo and notched the opening goal.

Many believed it would be his final appearance, and goal, in a United shirt, however Jose Mourinho has come out and categorically denied the reports.

Speaking to the press after the game, as quoted by Sky Sports, Mourinho said Fellaini "is too important" to him and joked that there was more chance of Galatasaray succeeding in signing him than United's big-haired midfielder.

Fellaini arrived at Old Trafford as the first signing of the disastrous David Moyes era, in 2013. The towering midfielder cost United £27.5 million and endured a nightmare first season at Old Trafford, as the team finished seventh and sacked Moyes before the end of the season.

Since his debut campaign, Fellaini has managed to endear himself more to the Old Trafford faithful, despite never being fully embraced by all quarters of United's support. The former Everton man has proven to be a useful Plan B, especially during Louis Van Gaal's reign, where he would often be thrown up front when United were chasing a game.

Fellaini has made 133 appearances for United during his four years with the club, scoring 15 goals and helping the Red Devils lift the 2016 FA Cup and this year's EFL Cup and Europa League.
