Gareth Bale's Future At Real Madrid In Doubt After April 1st

Gareth Bale's future at Real Madrid has some serious questions attached to it after April 1st because of Brexit and the very real possibility that United Kingdom leaves the EU with 'no deal.'

For many of us sport is proving the perfect escape from real life right now. Who the hell wants to hear the four hundred millionth news report about Brexit of that day or find out what stupid thing Piers Morgan is offended by.

Instead a good goal or a silly transfer story will sort you right out. That's why we were all thankful that BBC decided to keep the football on BBC 1 on Wednesday night, during Southampton vs Derby, rather than switching to listen to Theresa May.

Anyone who plays Football Manager will know that Brexit will affect how clubs in England do transfer business but it's not just teams based on these shores that will have to have a rethink.

Clubs outside of the UK with players from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland might also have to have a bit of a reshuffle and Gareth Bale is potentially in a spot of bother.

As per AS, Spain allows only three non EU players to be registered per team and a 'no deal' would leave Bale in that category after March 31st. Los Blancos already have Federico Valverde, Casemiro and Vinicius Junior registered as non EU players.

Bale could be saved by the fact that Brazil born Casemiro has started the process to gain Spanish nationality, which would free up one of the slots at the Bernabeu.

Things are further complicated by the fact that the Champions League holders will sign Rodrygo from Santos in the summer and the young forward will take up one of those slots should he be registered to play in the league.

Juan Ignacio Navas of legal experts Navas & Cusi Abogados Madrid spoke to ESPN FC about the possibility of players needing to leave and he explained, "There is Spanish legislation which cover the rights and liberties of non-EU nationals in Spain. The foreign player would need to get permission from the Spanish government in order to live and work in Spain. Put simply, they would need to get a license to work in Spain."

At one point Bale was seen as the eventual successor to Cristiano Ronaldo but now the Welshman will be lucky to remain in Spain past the summer, thanks Brexit!
