Fikayo Tomori could have been a West Ham United player for the season but the centre back decided to turn the move down, with just minutes left of transfer deadline day.

Monday saw a long day of deals being done and many others nearly being done but not quite. Chelsea looked likely to lose a centre back with Antonio Rudiger expected to leave the club.

When the German decided to stay at Stamford Bridge it was reported that Tomori could be the man to leave west London on a temporary deal.

Sky Sports reported that West Ham made a move for the 22-year-old and fans were awaiting an update as to whether he signed.

Once the deadline of 11pm had passed Sky reported that the deal was agreed between the clubs, with the Hammers paying a large loan fee, but Tomori rejected the move at 10.50pm.

David Moyes has wanted to sign a centre back to his team for the entirety of the transfer window, and it was his priority signing.

They tried to sign Burnley's James Tarkowski but Sean Dyche didn't want him to leave and the club asked for £50 million, a fee West Ham refused to meet.

Wesley Fofana was another target for the club but he moved to Leicester City instead, whilst Daniele Rugani and several others were also linked.

The inability to sign Tomori, simply because the player wouldn't move, will sting Moyes and his side despite a good start to the season.

Fans of the club were annoyed at the departure of youngster Grady Diangana and the club have failed to use the money to make signings, with only right back Vladimir Coufal joining this summer.

Tomori had a huge breakout season on loan at Derby County in 2018/19, when Frank Lampard was in charge of the Championship club, and played regularly last season for the Blues on his return to the club.

He played 15 times in the league and 22 overall, as Chelsea finished inside the top four, but has only made one substitute appearance in the league so far this season.
