It might still be a few months away but clubs will already be eyeing up who they can sign in the January transfer window. Everton have a pretty ambitious target considering the would be sellers have no interest in losing their player.

In the summer Ronald Koeman was a very busy man. The Everton manager may have lost Romelu Lukaku but he did also spend £150 million as the Toffees looked to close the gap on the top six.

It certainly would have been in the thoughts to challenge the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool for a place in the Europa League for next season when they brought in the likes of Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson but it hasn't worked out.

Instead of rocketing up the table the Goodison Park side find themselves in 16th having only won two of their first seven games and Koeman finds himself under pressure already.

So it's no surprise that Everton are being linked with strengthening again in January. According to Portuguese newspaper Record the Toffees are readying a £31 million bid for Sporting midfielder William Carvalho despite the club considering him 'untransferable.'

The 25 year-old defensive midfielder has long been linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and Arsenal the first teams to be linked and more recently West Ham United were said to be interested.

The report suggests that Everton have been to watch the player on a couple of occasions and that Koeman sees him as an 'ideal' addition to his floundering squad.

Clearly Sporting will be trying very hard to keep their player in the January transfer window but as always it will be difficult to keep hold of the player if he decides to go. He would essentially be a replacement for Gareth Barry who moved to West Brom last summer.

Everton's main area of concern is going forward where they clearly need to add more pace and more goals to their side.
