Roy Hodgson needs to try something, anything, to get his team scoring this season because after seven games they are goalless. The south London side are eyeing a surprise veteran to end their problems.

In the history of the Premier League no club has ever gone this long at the beginning of the season without scoring and no club has gone longer without picking up a point at this stage either.

It's fair to say that right now Crystal Palace are in a very bad place and they don't really have a paddle to help them get out of it. The last thing you need when you haven't scored in seven games is your 'best' striker being out injured.

Unfortunately for the Selhurst Park side that's exactly what they've got with former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke out for six weeks with a knee injury, not that he scored when he was available in fairness.

With the transfer window well shut and not opening anytime soon Palace need to look a free signings if they want a replacement. They've previously been linked with Rickie Lambert but according to ESPN they are now eyeing up Alberto Gilardino.

The 35 year old Italian striker is most well known for his time at AC Milan and Fiorentina where he scored 84 Serie A goals in 212 appearances for the two Italian sides.

He has been without a club since he left Pescara at the end of last season where he scored no goals in three appearances, before that time he was goalless in 14 league appearances for Empoli.

The former Italy international, who scored 19 goals in 57 appearances for his country, has previously been linked with a move to the Major Soccer League in America with former Didier Drogba haunt Montreal Impact but hasn't moved yet.

No one could come in and do any worse for Hodgson's side and with it needing to be a free transfer there aren't many options around.
