Nine years after leaving Ajax, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has returned to the Amsterdam Arena on a free transfer, bringing an end to the Dutch striker's seven year affiliation with Schalke 04.

Huntelaar rose to prominence with Ajax between 2005 and 2009, becoming one of the world's most prolific strikers with a remarkable record of 102 goals in just 134 games for the Eredivisie giants.

It was expected that the Netherlands international would go onto become one of the most feared centre forwards in world football, yet disappointing spells with AC Milan and Real Madrid put an end to those hopes, although a return of 126 goals in 204 appearances for Schalke did go some way to restoring the 33-year-old's damaged reputation.

The former Schalke hitman originally joined Ajax from Heerenveen in a deal worth a reported €9 million, in 2005.

Despite Huntelaar's relentless goal scoring record during his four years in Amsterdam, he could never fire the four time European champions to Eredivisie glory, instead having to settle for two KNVB Cup successes, in 2006 and 2007.

Further cup success came Huntelaar's way with Schalke, in 2010 as the former Real Madrid man helped himself to a brace in a 5-0 DFB Pokal final victory over MSV Duisburg.

Huntelaar has signed a one-year deal at the Amsterdam Arena, although given the form of Kasper Dolberg this season, bringing Huntelaar back isn't convincing everyone.

Can Huntelaar's experience help Peter Bosz's young team reclaim the Eredivisie crown, next season?
