Bayern Munich are closing in on the signing of yet another Bundesliga star, with Hoffenheim's Sandro Wagner poised to join in January.

The 29-year old is actually a former Bayern player, having come through the ranks in Bavaria before making eight appearances for the first-team side. He was sold in 2008 but as he has got older, he has really hit his stride - scoring 12 goals in 33 for Hoffenheim last season.

Robert Lewandowski urged his club to sign a striker to lessen the burden on him in attack, and the German champions have set their sights on the Germany international, who has five goals in seven appearances for his country, and see him as the ideal back-up.

Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes confirmed interest in signing Wagner in a recent press conference. As quoted by ESPN, he said:

"Hasan Salihamidzic and Alexander Rosen [the two sporting directors] are in contact to see if there is a possibility of a transfer.

"We are in this phase and no further - it's too early to say anymore.

"Such transfers are normally extremely difficult in winter. We have to see if it's possible and under what conditions."

Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has stated that the player himself does want the move, but says his club don't have to sell him.

"It's right and we've known for longer than yesterday," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"We are aware of his interest [in the transfer to Bayern]. We will make an announcement if there's something to announce. There are no grudges that he is interested, but there is sympathy.

"It's not my player, he belongs to the club. If the clubs reach an agreement, you try to compensate for things as a coach."

Wagner has four goals and two assists to his name in eight Bundesliga starts this season.
