As a former manager of Borussia Dortmund Jurgen Klopp must be fed up of missing out on players to Bayern Munich. But he might have to relive it all again this summer as Liverpool battle with Bayern for a player.

In the Bundesliga Klopp did an incredible record to catch and overhaul by far the biggest club in Germany when his Dortmund side won the German league title twice under him.

They also got to a Champions League final at Wembley where they unfortunately lost to Bayern.

During that time Dortmund lost Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski to their bigger rivals which must have been extremely frustrating. And just to annoy him Bayern are also interested in one of his summer targets.

According to Sport Bild today Carlo Ancelotti's side have jumped ahead of the Reds in the battle to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt in the summer with the player having a 12.5 million euro clause in his contract.

The 20 year old shone at last summer's Olympics with Germany's under 23 team as they won the silver medal, only falling at the last hurdle to an emotional Brazil team winning the tournament for the first time on home soil.

This season the youngster has scored twice and set up two goals for his club in the Bundesliga as they have struggled. The Champions League side are well out of European positions in 10th and 11 points behind Champions League qualification positions.

Brandt has until 2019 on his contract but the very short release clause in his deal comes into play next summer so if the club can't get him to sign a new deal then they'd be better off selling him for better money this summer.

Liverpool's main strength this season, and last, has been their attacking with the likes of Saido Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana often impressing.

However they have often been accused of not having enough strength in depth and so when Mane was at the African Cup of Nations their title challenge faded away.

Klopp will be hoping that Bayern's "advanced talks" aren't too far along to stop him signing the player.
