Bayern Munich are being linked with a move for Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

The news comes after the Bavarians' talisman Robert Lewandowski urged the club to bring in a back-up to lower the goalscoring burden on him at the Allianz Arena.

Poland's top scorer has scored 15 in 17 games for Bayern this season but recently suffered a thigh injury that he believes could be linked to being overly worked - given that there isn't really anyone in the ranks who can step in and fill the void.

Speaking to Sport Bild, he said:

"It would definitely be an option to sign a hungry, young striker who wants to learn from an experienced player.

"It would be a relief for me to play 15 or 20 minutes less in a game, then you have more energy for forthcoming games and a higher probability of staying fit and minimising the risk of injury."

"Of course, the club hierarchy will decide which striker is worth considering, but clearly we aren't talking about a top international striker.

"Forwards of this calibre want to be on the pitch themselves during the season's decisive games."

As per the same outlet, Bayern are exploring the idea of signing a deputy forward - with Giroud one of the names mentioned. The Frenchman, who was heavily courted by Everton in the summer, has been in and out of the Arsenal side this term, predominantly playing in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

Because of the arrival of his compatriot Alexandre Lacazette for a club-record fee, the former Montpellier man hasn't made a single Premier League start this season, managing just 177 minutes of action from the bench.

In addition to Giroud, Ajax striker Kasper Dolberg is the other contender to serve as Lewandowski's back-up. The 20-year old Danish international was in electric form last season, notching 23 goals in all competitions.
