Bacary Signs For Serie A Side

The former Arsenal and Manchester City full back had some big offers but made a surprising move.

There are certain players that make you think 'I wonder whatever happened to...' and despite only leaving the Premier League last summer Bacary Sagna falls into that category. Now the full back has found himself a new club.

Bacary Sagna still played 25 times for Manchester City last season but despite that it feel like it's been ages since the Frenchman played in England, Pep Guardiola's full back revolution at the Etihad Stadium has rather wiped history from our minds.

The 34 year old was one of many changes in the fullback department that Guardiola wanted to make after his first season left him trophyless for the first time in his managerial career.

Check out our interview with Sagna's former teammate Kevin de Bruyne:

That left Sagna without a team and he wasn't able to get one in the first half of the season but fortunately transfer windows don't mean anything for players available on a free transfer.

Today he moved to Italy to sign for bottom of Serie A side Benevento. The club confirmed the news on their website saying:

"This morning, at the Caravaggio Sporting Village in Naples, an agreement was reached between Benevento Calcio and footballer Bacary Sagna. In the presence of President Oreste Vigorito, the French defender of Senegalese origins signed a contract that binds him to the Giallorossi club until next 30th June. The intense includes the option for the extension until 30 June 2019. Bacary Sagna will be available to the technician De Zerbi from next week."

In an interview with Football Fancast the former Arsenal defender revealed that he'd had offers from bigger clubs and explained why he'd turned them down to join the Italian strugglers, saying, "In the past few months, I have had several offers from clubs in the top leagues in England, France, Spain, Turkey, the MLS and elsewhere in Italy. However, they were not the right moves for myself or my family.

"Going to Benevento is not a move I am making for financial reasons. I could have gone to many other clubs, many of whom made substantial offers to me. My career for the past decade has been at the very top level, what Benevento offers me is the opportunity to represent the underdog and to play for a club whose story is such a beautiful one.

"In an era when football has become more of a business at many clubs than an actual sport, Benevento represents the heart and soul of what a football club should be about. Passion, heart, hope, joy, love and a philosophy that is aligned to that of my own way of thinking in life."

What a guy!
