Diego Costa might not actually be Luis Suarez's new strike partner, with Atletico Madrid hoping to sign another forward to pair their new signing with.

Fans were instantly excited by the prospect of two career sh*thouses in Costa and Suarez linking up for Diego Simeone's side as soon as it became apparent Suarez was swapping Barcelona for Atleti.

However Simeone and the club look to have other ideas, with the club hoping to partner the former Liverpool forward with Edinson Cavani.

Simeone's side have been linked with Cavani for sometime, and were even expected to sign him as far back as last year, but have so far failed to get the move done.

According to Goal, the club have made an offer to the former PSG forward, in an attempt to link him up with his fellow countryman, and the news comes from Ruben Uria, who broke the news Lionel Messi would stay at the Nou Camp.

Uria claims that that the Spanish capital side have offered PSG's all time top scorer a one year deal with the option of a second year should they qualify for the Champions League.

He would be on a reduce salary from his time in Ligue 1, where he earned around £350,000-a-week according to some sources.

The former Napoli forward has been without a club since leaving the Ligue 1 champions towards the end of last season so could sign after the October 5th transfer deadline.

Perhaps the biggest stumbling block to the deal is Atleti's attempts to get rid of Costa, which will come as a blow to those hoping to see the Spain forward and his new teammate pair up.

Costa rejoined the club from Chelsea for around £50 million in January 2018 but injuries and a lack of any form have made it a failure of a move.

He's scored just 17 goals in 74 appearances for the team he won La Liga with in his first spell at the club, and as well as finishing runner up in the Champions League.

His high wages might make it tough to get rid of the 31-year-old but Fenerbahce are reportedly interested in signing him.

Atleti have already let Alvaro Morata re-join Juventus on loan this summer as well, after Suarez's own move their stalled.
