The rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham has ramped up ever since the white half of north London started looking like title contenders and now it could intensify over a transfer as both clubs look to sign a Premier League player in January.

It's a quirk of several rivalries in the Premier League that they matter far more to one of the teams than the other until parity is found. It happened in Manchester and it's happened in north London.

For a long time Manchester United's biggest rivalry was with Liverpool not City, some might still argue that it is with the Reds but there's no doubt their closest neighbours are a much bigger rival now. Equally Arsenal's tussles with United had made the Red Devils into the Gunners' biggest rivalry.

Now with Spurs having finally overtaken Arsenal last season the Gunners really have to take their north London rivals seriously as they now try to close the gap. To do that they'll also have to get past Mauricio Pochettino's side in the transfer window.

According to the Mirror both Arsenal and Spurs are ready to go toe-to-toe for the signing of Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez after the Algerian missed out on a move in the summer.

Of course it's not the first time that the Foxes' winger has been linked with a move to the Emirates and Arsenal have previously failed with attempts to sign him. This time of course he could be a replacement for Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez.

Spurs haven't been linked with Mahrez before but Mauricio Pochettino has previously tried to add more depth and pace to his squad and the Algerian could be the answer.

In the summer both Roma and Barcelona made offers for Mahrez but Craig Shakespeare decided not to sell. With Leicester's form poor at the moment the manager could choose to sell his biggest asset and strengthen the squad elsewhere.

Will it be Spurs or Arsenal who sign the player?
