So Antonio Conte has finally been sacked by Chelsea, months after we all knew he would be, but the Italian could have chosen to go sooner. Instead he decided to stick around to get his full pay out.

Half way through last season it started to become pretty evident that Antonio Conte was going to become the latest manager to be successful at Chelsea and pay for it with his job.

There's no way the Italian should have won the Premier League in the 2016/17 season considering what came before him and the competition around but they won it pretty easily and followed it up with FA Cup triumph last season.

Even before the win against Manchester United at Wembley he was expected to leave Stamford Bridge but as time went on the Blues were constantly linked to his replacement without ever actually sacking him.

Finally he's been got rid of just a day after the players returned to pre season training but he actually could have gone at the beginning of the summer on his own terms.

According to the Mirror, Conte was actually offered the chance to take the Real Madrid job but chose to get sacked so he was entitled to the whole £9 million compensation from his contract.

The former Blues boss was clearly very aware that had he chosen to walk away and take another job then he wouldn't have been entitled to any money, which would have been the club's preference.

Instead Roman Abramovich's club must pay Conte the full amount until he gets another job with the 48 year old actually expected to take a year out of the game.

At one point he was linked with the Italy and PSG jobs, as well as taking over from Zinedine Zidane at Real, but as those opportunities went the chances of him having to be sacked increased.

Zizou left after winning the Champions League and the report says that former Juve boss Conte was on the list of potential replacements but after he declined to talk to them they turned to former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui.

Wonder what Conte will do with his £9 million?
