The Best Songs From World Cup History

The Best Songs From World Cup History

From Scotland thinking it would be easy to Three Lions and Wavin' Flag, there's been some bangers!

Summer, summer, summertime. Time to sit back and unwind...and watch the World Cup of course. With the news that Will Smith will be recording this year's official World Cup song we take a look back at some of the songs that have come to define the competition.

That's right the Fresh Prince himself, or the character from Men in Black, or the guy from Suicide Squad, depending on your age, is going to be recording the official World Cup song for the tournament in Russia.

As if we weren't already excited enough that's got us really pumped. So it's time to take a look at some of the best songs that have come from previous World Cups, whether they're official songs or just from the greatest football advert ever...

Three Lions 98

We have to start back in 1998. Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds returned two years after whipping the country into Euro fever during the 96 tournament with an updated version of Three Lions for the tournament in France. Maybe it wasn't as good as the original but it was still brilliant.

Go Brazil

ITV's World Cup intro was sure to get you ready for whichever match you were about to watch. Vengaboys 'Go Brazil' had a real flavour of the country that produced some of the best football over the years and one of the best tournaments in a good while.

Wavin' Flag

The 2010 World Cup was a real celebration and the first tournament from Africa. Waka Waka was a fun song and a brilliant official theme but had nothing on K'NAAN's 'Wavin' Flag'. An upbeat track that lifted a pretty boring tournament, even if Siphiwe Tshabalala's goal in the opener got us off to a great start.

I'm Coming Out

The 1994 World Cup from USA had two official songs, neither of them was Diana Ross' 'I'm Coming Out' and yet it's the most memorable song from the tournament. That's because Ross was singing it at the opening ceremony, she was supposed to roll a 'penalty' into a fake net but she missed, one of the greatest moments in World Cup history!

La Copa de la Vida

This Ricky Martin number from the 1998 World Cup, meaning 'The Cup of Life,' is just an absolute banger plain and simple. A tournament of Zidane, Ronaldo, Batistuta and Croatia- it deserves a great song.

Mas Que Nada

Speaking of 98 and bangers. Mas Que Nada is a brilliant song and an absolute classic but throw in the Brazil side of 98 with Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Emerson, Rivaldo and of course Ronaldo running around an airport playing football and you've got the single greatest football advert ever.

Easy Easy

Okay so this one is just funny. In 1974 Scotland actually qualified for the World Cup, shocking I know! Their official song was called Easy Easy and when it came to their opener against Zaire they were right. But then Scotland drew with Brazil and Yugoslavia and unluckily went out at the Group Stage, oops! Upbeat song at least.

Vindaloo

Okay so this might be getting a bit 1998 heavy but sod it! Vindaloo, as well as Three Lions, wasn't actually the official song for England in France. That honour went to How Does It Feel To Be On Top Of The World by England United but who remembers that nonsense? We're England and we're going to score one more than you! Grab your mum, grab your dad, grab your gran, grab some Vindaloo and belt out this classic.

We're on the Ball

Ant and Dec trying to kidnap Sven Goran Eriksson and Tord Grip so they can pretend to be like them just to get to South Korea and Japan, references to England's 5-1 battering of Germany and that Beckham free kick against Greece. What's not to love?

Nessun Dorma

ITV might have got their music spot on for the World Cup in Brazil four years ago but BBC using Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma in 1990 for their intro became as iconic as Gazza's tears in Italy.

World In Motion

And last, but by no means least, World in Motion. It's back to 1990 again and it's got John Barnes rapping, what else do you need?!

Seriously the Fresh Prince will need to come up with a sweet tune to beat these classics.
