Big Update To World’s 50 Most Expensive Players List Sees Lionel Messi Drop

A major update of the world's 50 most valuable players has seen Lionel Messi drop out of the top 15, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski exit altogether.

Transfermarkt's list factors in a range of data including profile, age, ability and contract situation to assess market value. So no surprise that Messi - who turns 34 in the summer, just as his contract with Barcelona ends - should slump in value to "only" £72 million.

Juventus ace Ronaldo, meanwhile, has slipped out of the top 50 - probably on account of him turning 36 at the start of February. Not that it's stopped him scoring.

Bayern Munich's Lewandowski, who's 33 in the summer, has suffered the same fate and is only on the fringes of the top 50. Madness.

High risers include Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland - in the top 10 for the first time - and Manchester City's Phil Foden, who cracks the top 50. But at £54 million, the 20-year-old is not quite at the Noel Gallagher-approved £200 million level yet.

The No 1 spot overall is taken by Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe, the 22-year-old World Cup winner is given a massive £162 million transfer value. That puts him just above teammate Neymar (£115.2 million) in second.

After that are four Premier League players in joint third: Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, Tottenham's main man Harry Kane and Man City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

Hot on their heels is Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, who's climbed to an £81 million value. Heading in the other direction is his midfield partner Paul Pogba, who will apparently cost you £58.5 million.

The youngest player in the top 50, however, is 18-year-old Barcelona attacker Ansu Fati. He may be injured but his estimated value is £72 million (and the rest, if you actually wanted to prise him away from the Camp Nou).
