Thomas Tuchel Broke Huge 'Promise' With Chelsea Player Who Has Now Been Hit With 'Worst Possible News'

Thomas Tuchel Broke Huge 'Promise' With Chelsea Player Who Has Now Been Hit With 'Worst Possible News'

Thomas Tuchel still has plans for Saul Niguez at Chelsea, but he wants the Atletico Madrid man to play in a new position.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel reportedly ‘promised’ Saul Niguez that he would have a prominent role in midfield after he signed with the club in the summer.

Saul, who was previously linked with Manchester United, arrived at Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan deal.

The 27-year-old Spanish midfielder’s loan deal will expire in June 2022, but Chelsea have the option to make the move permanent.

However, Saul has been battling for minutes at Chelsea and only managed seven appearances across all competition under Tuchel.

According to Mundo Deportivo (as per Sport Witness), Tuchel had ‘promised Niguez prominence’ in the Chelsea midfield following his signing from Atletico.

The Spanish newspaper added that Tuchel’s comments over the Spain international providing cover for Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso is the ‘worst possible news’ for Saul.

Saul started for Chelsea in their 2-1 win over Watford at Vicarage Road, but he was pulled at half-time and replaced with Thiago Silva.

Tuchel still has faith in Saul to undergo a position change to provide much-needed cover in the absence of Chilwell, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

“Saul is still adapting and he had an early yellow card at Watford and was a bit shy to play all-in, in duels,” he said.

“For that, we lacked a bit of physicality because he did not want to risk a red card.

“I think that he could play in a wing-back role for us. Even if we play in a dominant game, an offensive game because he is very strong in arriving in the opponents’ box.

“He’s very strong in finishing, he has good timing to arrive at the far post for the header.

“He sometimes does this in training which is why we think he could be a good fit and, maybe in the next games, we have to try because Chilly is out long-term and a lot of games are coming and we maybe cannot put every game on Marcos’ shoulders.”

Chelsea travel to the London Stadium on Saturday for their Premier League clash with West Ham, with kick-off slated for 12:30pm UK time.
