For most people getting the chance to play at Wembley is a dream they could never imagine being possible. For Joe Thompson that dream seemed even more unlikely when he battled cancer for the second time but just eight months later he'd done it.

Thompson was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma for the first time in 2013 and was given the all-clear a year later. However in 2017 the League One player was hit with the awful news that the illness had returned.

Clearly a fighter of the highest regard Thompson was clear for the second time in June, taking to Twitter to triumphantly announced that he'd gone 2-0 up against cancer.

The 28 year-old, who started his career at 'Dale before moves to Tranmere Rovers, Bury and Carlisle United followed by a return to his first club, was back in training in August and making his first appearance off the bench in December.

Life hasn't exactly gone great in League One for the north west side this season and they currently sit bottom of the table and staring relegation in the face. However their 2-2 draw against Spurs in the FA Cup gave them an unlikely replay at Wembley.

They may have been battered in the second half, finishing the game as 6-1 losers, but Thompson was able to play around half an hour and took to Twitter after the match:

An absolutely incredible turnaround for Joe. You can't help but like this player!
