The Mambo No.5 Shirt Is Now A Thing

The Mambo No.5 Shirt Is Now A Thing

Our prayers have been answered.

A couple of days ago, Ebbsfleet United defender Yado Mambo became a viral sensation because of his squad number.

Mambo, currently in his third spell with Ebbsfleet, having joined on loan from Charlton Athletic in 2011/12 and again in 2013/14, wears the No.18 shirt but his television appearance against Leyton Orient five days ago caused plenty of outrage. The reason being that the National League side really missed a trick in not giving him the No.5 shirt.

MAMBO NUMBER FIVE?! That's right. Ebbsfleet's banter levels would have soared through the roof if they would have made it a thing and harked back to the absolute tune from Lou Bega back in 1999.

The campaign to get Mambo wearing the correct number picked up some serious steam, and the man himself was well onboard with it, saying that the catchy song about Pamela, Rita, Erica, Monica, Sandra and Jessica, was one of his favourites when he was a kid.

Because this season's squad numbers have already been registered, and United skipper Dave Winfield holds the No.5, Ebbsfleet are not able to make the shirt number swap mid-season without breaking rules.

However, they've made a brilliant compromise. As revealed in a statement on the club's official website, they have released a special one-off Mambo No.5 shirt for charity. The shirt, which is XL, comes with a certificate of authenticity and a signed photo of the 26-year old.

It's been auctioned on Ebay, with a private bid of £350 kicking off proceedings. The funds raised from the shirt will go straight to Prostate Cancer UK, and there's six days remaining on the auction. If you want to get your hands on the legendary, one of a kind shirt, you can do so by bidding here.

Well played Ebbsfleet. Get bidding, lads...
