It's one of those famous lies that gets bandied around when a high profile player signs for a club that he'll pay it back in shirt sales alone. Neymar is nowhere near that but he has sold quite a few shirts.
Everyone loves a high profile signing, the fans get very excited about a player joining, the manager has a new toy to play with in his team and the journalists can write endlessly about the transfer.
One man who isn't a fan is the bank manager who sees millions go out of the account. There's a belief that a player will make back what they cost in shirt sales but it's a complete myth and not true at all.

Want some proof? Well you'd have thought that if anyone was going to make up a big chunk of money after his transfer it would be Neymar and whilst the world record fee player has sold a lot of shirts he's only made about £8 million of shirt sales in a month.
According to the Daily Mail that has meant 120,000 sales of Neymar shirts in the last 30 days, meaning a profit of £7.8 million. The Ligue 1 club have in result seen a 75% rise in shirt sales from this time last year.

The Ligue 1 side only have supply of Neymar shirts up until November, when presumably they get a new batch in time for Christmas presents, but they are apparently close to running short of what they have in stock already.
Neymar has had a very good start to life in the capital of France since his £198 million move from Barcelona in the summer and has scored five goals in five games for PSG so far.

Despite the shirt sales he'll have to go a long way before he gets anywhere near paying back what he cost, but if Unai Emery's side manage to win the Champions League this season then that'll probably do it!
