Not only is he a complete and utter genius on the pitch, Lionel Messi is also making a real difference off the pitch according to recent reports.

As per Mundo Deportivo, Messi has donated 4,000,000 Argentine pesos, which equates to just over £200,000 to improve the standard of facilities at a youth club in his native Argentina.

The consensus is that the funding, done through his foundation, will go towards renovated facilities at a sports club in Lanus and help with the development of the next crop of youngsters coming through the ranks.

Damian Sala, who is the secretary of sports in the city of Buenos Aires, is delighted about the gesture made by the Barcelona superstar.

He said:

"We are very grateful to the Messi Foundation because it allows us to do great work for the boys.

"This is a very important achievement because it is the first time that an entity of this size has made a major investment in Lanus."

Being a footballing superstar and a five-time Ballon d'Or means that Messi does have a substantial amount of money in his bank account but it's great to see him investing back in the community and providing a new football pitch for the youngsters in Lanus.

After all, he was once a young kid trying to achieve a dream of becoming a professional footballer and after tearing it up for Newell's Old Boys youth sides, the team he supported as a boy, Messi moved to Catalonia to become part of the esteemed La Masia youth set-up at Barcelona and the rest is history.

In recent figures collated and published by Forbes, Messi was the second highest-paid sportsman for 2016 on the whole - raking in a massive £65m through wages at Barcelona and various sponsorship and endorsement deals.
