Lionel Messi Closes In On Eerily Similar Record To Cristiano Ronaldo

They are so close to each other.

Between the pair of them Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have played 1462 football matches. Whilst Messi has played around 150 fewer games than his older rival it's surprising how close their goal making and scoring records are considering the amount of matches played.

Unfortunately in this age of social media and tribalism too many people can't just appreciate that we live in an age of two of the most talented players of all time constantly battling each other for team and personal silverware and sharing a list of records that could fill a Guinness Book of Records on its own.

However this weekend we could be at a point where Messi levels pretty much everything with his Real Madrid counterpart. Sure he'll have played 150 games fewer but if the Barcelona man scores or sets up one more goal against Granada than Ronaldo does against Alaves then they'll be level.

Yep, if that happens Messi will have 744 goals and assists in 648 appearances whilst Ronaldo would have his 744 goals and assists in 816.

It's quite incredible that the pair sit so close in terms of this stat and sure plenty of players must be close at one point in their career with someone else but after so many years and so many goals scored or set up it's eery how close the pair remain.

Los Blancos might be two points clear of Barca in the league at the moment but in their personal battle CR7 has only scored twice in the league this season whilst Messi has seven in five starts.

What a time to be alive.
