WATCH: Danny Webber Responds To Trolls With Classy Goal For Manchester United Legends

The former United youngster silenced his doubters, this afternoon

The term 'legend' is thrown around far too liberally nowadays and nowhere is this overused compliment more prevalent than in the world of football, where 'legends' games are regularly littered with players who made a handful of substitute appearances for a club at the back end of the 1999/2000 season or once made the bench of a league cup final.

During today's 'legends' game between Manchester United and Barcelona, at Old Trafford, there were, in fairness, a selection of great ex-players on show such as Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Edwin van Der Sar, Eric Abidal and, erm, Danny Webber.

Webber never made a single Premier League appearance for United during his five year affiliation with the club, instead being restricted to a couple of League Cup appearances and a series of loan moves before he departed Old Trafford in 2003.

The now 35-year-old striker made his name playing up front for Watford and Sheffield United, while also taking in spells with Portsmouth, Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers and Accrington Stanley.

So it was with much skepticism that Webber was named among the substitutes for United's 'legends' team today.

But it would be Webber who would silence the critics and have the last laugh as he came from the bench to score a gloriously taken goal, as can be seen above.

The chipped finish the 35-year-old opted for evoked memories of Alexis Sanchez doing something similar during Arsenal's crushing 5-1 victory over West Ham at the London stadium, last season.

Webber's goal extended United's lead to 2-0 on the day, following a penalty from Van Nistelrooy. However, second half strikes from Luis Garcia and Gaizka Mendieta levelled the match, which finished 2-2.
