Goal Of The Day: One Of Marco Van Basten's Finest

The Dutchman scored some belters in his career.

Marco van Basten, one of the most gifted strikers in world football, celebrates his 52th birthday today.

The Dutchman is a three-time Ballon d'Or winner and provided so many moments of magic for Ajax, AC Milan and the Netherlands national team.

MVB had a knack of scoring all types of goals but he specialised in thunderous volleys, screamers and great goals.

When it came to selecting one for today's goal of the day, the obvious option would be to pick van Basten's sublime volley against the USSR in the 1988 Euro final. It's a goal I've recreated in Sunday League, although it wasn't as venomous.

Anyway, I've gone for a goal that was equally as outrageous.

The current Netherlands assistant was a master of overhead/bicycle kicks and one of his finest came in a 3-1 win over Den Bosch in 1986.

After a deep cross was swung in from the right, van Basten expertly peeled away from his marker to the back post, timed his movement impeccably and unleashed a stunning overhead kick that kissed the post on its way in.

It remains one of the greatest overhead kicks you'll ever see. Rooney can do one, van Basten will always be the king of the overhead kick.

Happy birthday, Marco. Cheers for the goals.
