Fans Show Incredible Support As Club Gets Relegated To Fifth Tier

BSG Chemie Leipzig will be in the fifth tier of German football next season but that didn't put fans off travelling away.

It can be very tough being a football fan, you can't suddenly stop loving your team just because they're doing a bit rubbish, which is why fans of BSG Chemie Leipzig were still clapping their fans through relegation to the fifth tier of German football.

Sunderland fans have seen their team relegated twice in a row, Brechin City fans didn't see their team win once in the league this season, Dulwich and Hamlet fans have had to deal with their team being forced to move stadiums and Arsenal fans have had to make do with a Europa League semi final and sixth place!

Basically it can be really tough being a football fan, and also it really isn't that bad being an Arsenal fan so stop moaning you lot, it could be a hell of a lot worse!

However fans mainly still keep turning up and supporting their team, in fact often in the worst times the fans come to the fore even more and that was definitely the case for BSG Chemie Leipzig.

The German side lost 5-0 to Hertha Berlin II in the Regionalliga Nordost on Friday night meaning they'll slip further down the German footballing ladder but around 800 fans cheered and sang to the players at the end of the game despite everything, brilliant scenes.

The smaller of the Leipzig sides play just 10 minutes away from newly formed club RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga side have courted lots of interest in the last few years because of the investment from Red Bull.

They have moved up to the top tier of German football after winning Bundesliga 2 two years ago and are now in the top six and due to be in the Europa League for the second season running.

Brechin City Equal 126 Year Record By Not Winning A League Game All Season

It can be hard to be a season ticket holder when your team is struggling, going to your ground every week and not seeing much back from your monetary and emotional investment. So we feel really sorry for fans of Brechin City in Scotland.

They say that both winning and losing are habits. Start doing one for long enough and it suddenly becomes extremely difficult to do the other, Manchester City's season has been proof of that.

It's fair to say that Brechin City players in the Scottish Championship have really run with a bad habit, managing to go the whole season in Scotland's second tier without winning a single game.

Brechin had gone 35 league games without a win before Saturday's game at home against Queens' Park, giving them one last chance to pick up a 'W' before the season finished.

However instead of claiming a morsel of good news for the season they were hammered 5-1 on the last day of the season with substitute Isaac Layne scoring in the 78th minute after his team were already five down.

Of course the loss meant that Brechin finished rock bottom of Scotland's second tier on just four points after managing to get four draws, to go along with their 32 losses!

It is the first time in 126 years that a club in Scotland has managed to go the whole league season without picking up a win. Back in the 1891/92 season Vale of Leven also failed to win a game.

In fairness to Darren Dod's whilst they did finish 26 points off safety they were one of only two sides in the second tier of Scottish football who weren't full-time professionals.

Dumbarton, the other side to be relegated, are also not full time professionals.

89-year-old fan, Margaret Noble spoke to BBC Sport after the club had gone the whole season undefeated and said, "I just keep smiling. You've got to. I live on my own, my daughter is in America and my son is in Dorset. That [Brechin City] is my family.

"I'll go to the presentation tonight, see the players get their presentation. It hasn't been the best but I still think our boys play quite good football. And we scored a goal."

With fans like Margaret we think they'll be fine, even if they didn't win a game all season.
