Injuries in football are never fun and even worse so when a player has to retire at a young age due to one. That's unfortunately what's happened to former Liverpool and Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique at just 31.

For any player the dream when it comes to hanging up the boots is to do it in a blaze of glory, on your own terms, having won the Champions League or a World Cup at the age of 40- we'll all be hoping Gianluigi Buffon gets to do that this summer.

The complete opposite of that of course is having your career curtailed by an injury that leaves you needing painkillers just to fight through, the fate that has befallen former Liverpool cult hero Jose Enrique.

The Spaniard announced his retirement on Instagram:

Enrique played for Real Zaragoza last season after being released by Liverpool but had been without a club since the summer and speaking to Marca about his injury he said:

"I could not play without medication, I did not even train. It was hard, desperate. Sometimes I got dizzy in training on so much medication. After every game my knee swelled like a ball and I was barely able to walk for three days.

"Something that was supposed to be for three months ended up turning into two years."

Fans on Twitter paid tribute to the former player:

We wish Enrique all the best in whatever he does next.
