He may not have enjoyed much in the way of first team action under Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge, this season, but Cesc Fabregas has made his opportunities count when called upon by his manager.

And tonight, during Chelsea's comfortable defeat of Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge, the Spanish midfielder set a new Premier League record.

Heading into tonight's Premier League clash with 'Boro, Fabregas was sat on nine league assists. Not a bad record for a player who has played second fiddle to N'Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic for most of the campaign.

A tenth assist would mean the former Arsenal man would have registered double figures for a sixth Premier League season, nothing anyone else has ever done before.

And the World Cup winner duly delivered.

In the first half a Fabregas cross was converted by Diego Costa, with many believing that to be the record breaking pass. However, due to the cross deflecting off Middlesbrough defender Fabio en route to Costa, some fans were claiming the assist didn't belong to the former Barcelona man.

However, in the second half, Fabrgeas laid on Matic for Chelsea's third goal of the evening, with no issues surrounding whether or not the assist was his, thus definitively setting the record.

The Spanish midfielder had made just 23 league appearances, this season and has been strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer, with AC Milan reportedly firm favourites to land the Premier League winner.

Given Fabregas' ability to lay on goals for his teammates at will, however, Antonio Conte may be tempted to keep the 29-year-old around a little while longer.
