On This Day In 2004: Steven Gerrard Scores Sensational Late Goal Vs Olympiakos

Steven Gerrard set Liverpool on course for Champions League glory.

On this day in 2004, Steven Gerrard's wonder goal was the seminal moment of what would be one of the most dramatic Champions League triumphs of all time.

Heading into their final group game of the Champions League in 2004, Liverpool sat three points behind opponents Olympiakos in third place in Group A knowing only a win by two goals would take them through to the knockout stages.

The score was 2-1 in 'The Reds' favour going into the final few minutes when Gerrard smashed the ball past the keeper to make it 3-1 and seal qualification.

Liverpool went on to win the Champions League that year and if not for this goal, the famous Instanbul final victory over AC Milan never happens.

Gerrard has spoken about the moment in the years since.

The current Aston Villa manager also named the goal as his favourite in terms of atmosphere from the fans.

He told The Independent in 2013: "When you are in that position and one falls for you it's make or break at that moment.

"Luckily for me it was one of the sweetest strikes I have ever hit. Just such a relief to see the net go.

"If I had to pick my favourite goal for connection and also the reaction of the crowd - that's the one."

The moment has also become famous for Andy Gray's commentary.

The former Sky Sports commentator coined the iconic 'you beauty, what a hit son' line when the former England man ran off in celebration.

"The memory is still so strong,” said Gray.

"When I look back over my career so far it pops up as one of the main games.

"And it started the journey to Istanbul. And Andy Gray's commentary made the goal even better than it was."

Take a bow indeed Stevie.
