Steven Gerrard Given Incredible Reception On First Visit To Anfield As A Manager

The new Aston Villa manager returned to the place where he became a legend as a footballer to take on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard was given a warm welcome to Anfield, as he returned to the ground where he made his name for the first time as a manager.

Gerrard took his Aston Villa team to Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, and the club legend was given an extremely warm welcome by their fans.

It's the first time the former midfielder has been back on the hallowed turf in an official match since leaving the club for LA Galaxy in 2015.

Despite being the away team manager, Liverpool fans were clearly happy to see the man who helped win them the Champions League in 2005.

Since the former Liverpool captain moved from Rangers to Villa in November, after Dean Smith was sacked from the Midlands club, there has been lots of talk of him one day taking over from Klopp.

Former players managing their clubs has been all the rage, with Frank Lampard, Xavi, Mikel Arteta and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer amongst the examples with differing amount of success.

However Gerrard has refused to talk about the possible future, "I don't think this press conference should be about any other club but Aston Villa," he said when asked about his return to Anfield.

"I think everyone around the world knows what Liverpool means to me, but the focus and my commitment is very much at Aston Villa."

Since taking over from Smith, the new Villa boss has guided his team to three wins in four Premier League games, with the loss coming to defending champions Manchester City.

That has successfully negotiated the club away from the relegation zone and they currently sit nine points above the bottom three, ahead of the weekend's games.
