Liverpool's first game of the 2019-2020 season will be at home to Norwich City and the only time this happened previously, Liverpool won the league.

Per OptaJoe, Liverpool opened their First Division campaign in 1976 under Bill Shankly at home to Norwich and ran out 1-0 winners following a Steve Heighway goal.

Fast forward to the end of the season and Liverpool were First Division Champions, winning their 10th domestic league title.

Who came second that year?

Manchester City.

Liverpool won the title by one point that year, similar to Manchester City's triumph last season.

The Champions League holders will be hoping to start the new season brightly in their Friday night kick-off against Norwich.

The Reds tend to have a good record against the newly promoted Canaries, with the name Luis Suarez surely still haunting Norwich fans nightmares.

The Uruguayan scored twelve goals in six games against the Canaries during his stint in England, including three hat-tricks.

However, the fixture is also significant for a bonkers 5-4 score line back in 2016.

A stoppage time equaliser from Sebastian Bassong followed by a winner from Adam Lallana three minutes from time let Liverpool fans get a taster of the emotional rollercoaster Jurgen Klopp would be taking them on.

After just falling short last season, Klopp will be hoping his side can pip Manchester City to the Premier League title in 2020 and end a long wait.

Last season saw them and City push all the way to the final day before City's 4-1 victory away to Brighton & Hove Albion clinched Pep Guardiola's side their second successive Premier League title.

However, if the fixture list is an omen for things to come, there is a chance that this year could be Liverpool's year.
