Burton Albion Are The Most Successful Club On Boxing Day

Boxing Day for football fans always means watching plenty of games, whether it's going to them live or sitting on the couch, as is the case this season, and it's a particularly good day for some sides.

Teams in England have been playing on Boxing Day for as long as they've been playing football and even in these weird times that tradition is continuing.

Some teams obviously like their turkey a bit more than others as there's a big difference between those sides who do well the day after Santa delivers the presents and those who take a stuffing after eating too much of it.

According to Sky Sports, who checked every English side's results on December 26th since 1888, Burton Albion have the best success rate of any side, winning four of their five games on that date, before 2020's fixtures.

MK Dons are next on the list, with eight wins from 12, giving them a winning record of 66/7%, which isn't bad at all.

The top Premier League side are Manchester United, who had won 51 of their 93 games to give them a 54.8% record.

On Saturday however Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were held to a 2-2 draw against Leicester City, thanks to Axel Tuanzebe's unfortunate late own goal, meaning their 100% away record in the league ended and their Boxing Day record took a knock.

United took the lead through Marcus Rashford, thanks to Bruno Fernandes' assist, and, after Harvey Barnes had made it 1-1, Rashford really should have made it 2-1 but was foiled by Kasper Schmeichel, before Bruno eventually did.

At the other end of the spectrum Fleetwood Town and AFC Wimbledon have only managed one win from their first five appearances on Boxing Day.

Newport County are next on the list with just 10 wins from 49 games and QPR don't fare much better, having won 19 from 71.

Oddly West Brom are the team who have played the most times after opening all their presents, but they don't play till the 27th this year, with 101 games in 129 years.

Of course it wouldn't be a football article about Boxing Day without mentioning 1963, when 65 goals were scored in the 10 top tier games, including Fulham putting 10 past Ipswich Town.
