It wasn't a good day for Ross Barkley.

Poor Ross Barkley, it's not been a good couple of weeks for him. After his England disappointment a Merseyside derby could have been the best way to get over it but it just made it all worse.

It wasn't a particularly good international break for Everton with James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman picking up very untimely injuries on duty for the Republic of Ireland.

Barkley would have struggled to pick up an injury as he had to make do with a place sitting on his backside for 180 minutes for England.

The Everton number 10 has been pretty good for the seventh placed side in the Premier League and deserved his call up to Gareth Southgate's squad.

However the new England boss didn't call on him for a single minute during the game's against Germany and Lithuania.

And his return to Goodison Park hasn't been improved with a display that has got the headlines for all the wrong reasons including this moment Philippe Coutinho sat him on his arse:

Coutinho was a constant thorn in the side of Everton all afternoon as he scored and set up two of Liverpool's goals in their 3-1 win.

The Brazilian, back off his own international duty, was the Man of the Match as his opposite number 10 struggled to have a positive impact on the game.

Things were even worse for Barkley in the first half with many thinking he should have been sent off for this challenge on Dejan Lovren:

Not a good day.
