Rio Ferdinand has taken a dig at Liverpool fans after speaking about the Reds' Premier League title challenge this season.

Jürgen Klopp's men are at the top of the Premier League and are two points clear of Manchester City -- the latter have played one match less -- before the start of the international break.

As a former Manchester United player, Ferdinand admitted that it was difficult to pick between the two sides due to his allegiances, but he ultimately chose City over Liverpool.

"This is the worst possible case scenario for someone that likes Man United, supports Man United and has played for Man United, and I'm a pundit that's got to speak about it publicly and squirm and what not," he told the Mirror.

"So the better of the two evils is Manchester City winning the league as I've seen it, I've been part of it.

"I've seen it as a player and a football fan, so I've been able to deal with it emotionally."

The 40-year-old United legend wasn't done there. Nope, he decided to stir the hornet nest with a swipe at Liverpool supporters.

"There's fans I didn't even know supported Liverpool that have come back out of the woodwork after 20 years of being silent that are starting to speak before they've won anything, so it'd be a lot more painful to see them win the league [over Man City], but listen the best team will win it and whoever that is well done," he said.

The rivalry between Liverpool and United, which was voted as the biggest in British football, remains well and truly alive.

Earlier this month, a supercomputer predicted the outcome of the title race between Liverpool and City.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola's hopes of capturing a quadruple remain alive, with his side progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and securing their spot in the FA Cup semi-final after making a comeback against Swansea City.

Will Liverpool win the league this season?
