Manchester City fans are already missing former Manchester United boss José Mourinho.

The 55-year-old Portuguese manager was sacked today, following on from the Red Devils' 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

During City's EFL Cup match with Leicester City, fans were paying their tribute to the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss by chanting, "Bring back Mourinho!"

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for Pep Guardiola's side with a superb strike.

The reigning Premier League champions lead 1-0 at half-time.

United assistant manager Michael Carrick will assume the role of interim coach while the club looks for their new caretaker boss.

"A caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager," reads United's statement.

"The club would like to thank José for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future."

Former United star Ole Gunnar Solskjær is one of the strong favourites to become caretaker manager, with many fans already warming up to the idea of him returning to Old Trafford.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has already praised Mourinho's contribution to the club, saying that he is the best United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He's a winner, isn't he? How can I sit here and say anything bad about José Mourinho?" he said.

"He's a serial winner everywhere he has gone.

"He's been sacked at United, but he's won them a couple of trophies. He's done the best job since Alex Ferguson left.

"It seems like they sort of struggled, but José came in and put a couple of trophies in the cabinet, so I don't think you can criticise him too much.

"It will be interesting to see which direction they go with the new manager, but none of the Man Utd fans care what I say about it!"
