James Milner has explained the differences between Virgil van Dijk and Vincent Kompany, the two world class centre backs he's played with, calling the Dutchman 'more of a Rolls Royce player.'

The Liverpool midfielder has been around in the Premier League so long he's the answer to half of all quiz questions you've likely been doing.

In that time he's played with two of the best centre backs of the era in Kompany and Van Dijk, both integral to their sides.

"They're both massive players..." Milner told Gary Neville on Sky Sports Football Show when asked about their differences, "You always look at the spine of any successful team and it starts with the leaders at the back.

"Vinnie, obviously, was an unbelievable player with how he went about his business - but struggled with injuries.

"But the amount of injuries I saw him play through that no-one else would have seen is incredible.

"He'd put his head on the line, unbelievable leader and great captain with so many great qualities. Rightly so, one of the greatest defenders to ever play in the Premier League.

"Obviously Virg is a bit different to that, maybe a bit more of Rolls-Royce, if you like.

"He doesn't seem to make too many tackles as he gets in the right spot and moves the ball away.

"Maybe has a few more diags [diagonal passes] in his locker, too."

Kompany was integral to all four of City's Premier League titles, even in his last season with the club when he only made 17 appearances in the league.

The Belgian became a regular in the starting line up in the second half of the season as their form post New Year led to them winning the title again and his goal against Leicester City in May last year essentially made the difference to the title race.

Van Dijk, who was bought for a world record fee for a defender in 2018, has helped transform Liverpool in defence and taken them to touching distance of winning their first league title in 30 years.

The Dutchman has been so good since his move from Southampton that he's been mentioned alongside the likes of Kompany, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Tony Adams as the Premier League's best defenders already.

Who will end their career considered the better defender, Kompany or Van Dijk? Let us know in the comments.
