Tensions and emotions can run high approaching derby days, with events spiralling out of control as rival fans engage in, well, usually appalling banter that involves Twitter spats and truly atrocious banner making.
However, a football fan in Tanzania went one step further and lost his wife, albeit temporarily to a rival after a bet went horrendously pear shaped.
The BBC's Osasu Obayiuwana brought the bet to the attention of social media, after a Dar es Salaam derby match between local rivals Simba SC and Young Africans SC.

How does the Dar es Salaam compare to some of these rivalries from around the world, though?
Ahead of the game, two plucky fans decided that their better halves was worth wagering on the clash, which Simba went onto win 2-1.

Obayiuwana would go onto discuss the bet on BBC's World Football podcast where he revealed that the Young Africans fan had eventually managed to barter his way out of losing his wife and instead managed to agree upon a monetary settlement. Although Obayiuwana does admit that bets have actually been settled with the exchange of wives in the past.
Maybe just stick a tenner on it next time, lads?
