Atletico Madrid opened their 2017/18 La Liga campaign in thrilling fashion. They trailed by two goals before earning a point, and did so without Antoine Griezmann who was shown his first red card in his professional career.

Diego Simeone took his charges to new boys Girona, and they got off to the worse start possible.

Conversely, Girona made a dream start to the Spanish top flight as former Boro striker Cristhian Stuani netted twice in the space of three minutes to give the hosts a two goal lead at the break.

In the second half, Griezmann raced onto a through ball and ran in behind Girona's back line to sneak the ball past the on rushing keeper. Though the referee Juan Martinez Munuera adjudged the Frenchman to have dived.

Griezmann was shown a yellow card for simulation. But he then reacted angrily and was immediately brandished another yellow card for dissent ultimately getting him sent off.

And a day removed from the incident, the official match report has been released detailing the exchange between Griezmann and the referee.

He reportedly said 'eres un cagón' to the referee which translates to 'you're a f***ing bottler', according to AS.

Wow. Savage from Griezmann.

Despite Griezmann's absence, Atleti salvaged a draw. Angel Correa pulled one back before Jose Gimenez leveled in the 87th minute.

Meanwhile, their cross town rivals are in action tonight as well as Barcelona. The La Liga is back!
