Republic of Ireland are one step closer to qualifier for a World Cup for the first time since 2002 thanks to a crucial 1-0 win over Wales in Cardiff.
An excellent right-footed finish from James McClean in the 57th minute was enough to beat Chris Coleman's side on their own patch, and ensure it was Martin O'Neill's troops who took second place in Group D, finishing two points ahead of Wales after victory in the final fixture.

The Irish, who were in third place going into the game, were under the cosh for large spells at the Cardiff City Stadium and were restricted to opportunities going forward. But they made the most of the one clear-cut chance they created, and will be on the plane to Russia next summer should they win a two-legged play-off in November.
