Virgil Van Dijk Is Taking Pelters After Screwing Up For City's Opener

The Liverpool centre back was definitely at fault for the first goal in the Champions League quarter final.

Oh Virgil van Dijk, that was not becoming of the most expensive defender in the history of football. The Liverpool centre back was getting dog's abuse after messing up early in tonight's Champions League game.

Just how is your nerve Liverpool fans? Taking a 3-0 lead into the second leg of the Champions League quarter final after a stunning victory at Anfield last week the one thing Jurgen Klopp's side needed was to stay tight at the back for as long as possible.

Pep Guardiola went super attacking with just three men at the back and an array of attacking midfielders with David and Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Kevin de Bruyne supporting Gabriel Jesus.

That kind of side doesn't really need too much help to create chances and the last thing the Reds needed was to concede an early goal. Well those two things kind of combined as Virgil van Dijk screwed up to give City an early lead:

He claimed a foul from former Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling but it clearly wasn't a foul and Sterling eventually set up Jesus for the goal. Fans couldn't believe that a player of his height, bought for so much money, could be swatted away so easily by the Englishman:

Liverpool will need their defenders to do better than that for the rest of the game.
