Manchester United are now in direct talks with Cristiano Ronaldo's agent to arrange a sensational return to the Premier League.

After widespread reports that Manchester City were edging closer to seal the transfer for the Portuguese forward, it has been revealed by many journalists that United have entered the race to bring him back to Old Trafford.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently tweeted: "Manchester United have been in direct contact with Jorge Mendes since yesterday night for Cristiano Ronaldo comeback.

"Now board talking about figures of the deal, potential salary & also fee for Juventus. Man United are now 'seriously interested' - as Man City too."

These reports were also corroborated by The Athletic and The Telegraph who have both confirmed that United are in talks with the player and are increasingly confident that the deal can happen.

This would mark a return after leaving Old Trafford more than a decade ago where he won three Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup.

It was reported in Italy earlier this week that the Portuguese superstar was unhappy in Turin and was looking for a move away from the Serie A.

This was confirmed by Juventus manager Masimiliano Allegri this morning when he said: "Cristiano Ronaldo told me yesterday that he wants to LEAVE Juventus immediatly. It's true and confirmed. This is why he wasn't training today and he's not available for tomorrow match vs Empoli."

Talks are accelerating between Manchester United and Juventus and the deal could be completed by the end of the weekend.
