Sao Paulo supporter Lago de Melo Rios is lucky to be alive after he plunged from the top tier of the Estadio Cicero Pompeu de Toledo stadium in Brazil.

The 23-year-old attended the club's Serie A game against Gremio at the weekend when he attempted to climb on the railings that guard the top tier of the stand, according to local reports.

He instead fell over the barricade and plummeted a reported 40ft, eventually landing on Giovana Santos Araujo, a 13-year-old girl who cushioned his fall.

Rios miraculously survived the incident and so did the girl. They were both rushed to hospital as the man is believed to have suffered a broken femur, while Giovana didn't suffer any serious injury.

The 23-year-old's mother, Lilian Barcelos de Melo, spoke to local media after being told about the fall from someone who had seen it online.

"His girlfriend called me and said she had seen it on the internet. She saw that someone had fallen in the stadium.

"She called him straight away and someone answered the phone saying that it was him who had fallen from the top tier of the Morumbi, just minutes after it happened. It was a real scare."

Sao Paulo could only secure a point against Gremio as Dani Alves and co. could not find the back of the net.
