Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt was involved in a heated Twitter spat with controversial personality Katie Hopkins earlier following comments she made about the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Mass protests continue to take place around the world following the death of George Floyd on Monday 25 May.

Disturbing video footage of Floyd's arrest showed him being led out on to the pavement in handcuffs before being placed on the ground face-down.

Police officers could be seen holding Floyd down, with officer Derek Chauvin placing his knee on his neck - prompting Floyd to speak out to the officers, telling them: "I can't breathe."

He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Millions have since voiced their support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement on social media and on Thursday night, Dutch international van Aanholt responded to Hopkins after she shared her views on the situation.

In a post on her official Twitter account, Hopkins tweeted: "Today is #whiteoutwednesday I will shortly be posting a picture of my arse. Thank you."

Van Aanholt soon responded, saying: "I don't know who she is but WOW...2020 needs to cancel you" before making a comment about a video she directed towards the Black Lives Matter protesters.

Hopkins then addressed van Aanholt in her own tweet, but it didn't take long for the former Sunderland full-back to hit back.

The pair continued to exchange messages on Twitter, where van Aanholt eventually called it a day with a promise of his own.
