Northern Ireland Manager Reveals Why He Didn't Play Will Grigg During Euro's
Will Grigg didn't feature for Northern Ireland as boss Michael O'Neil has revealed why.
Grigg was on fire for Wigan en route to their promotion to the Championship - subsequently receiving a call-up to the national side - thus creating one of the greatest football chants which swept the Euro's.
Northern Ireland, who were enjoying their first Euro campaign, miraculously progressed through to the Last 16 just winning one game but enough to qualify as one of the best third place sides. They were paired with Wales in what was being dubbed as 'Battle of Britain'. Unfortunately for O'Neil's men, a Gareth McAuley own goal was enough to advance Wales to the quarter finals. It was their fourth game of the tournament as Grigg, again, did not feature.
As expected, during the post-match press conference O'Neil was asked why he never gave the 24-year-old a run-out, to which he replied with:
Northern Ireland manager O'Neill on @WillGrigg not playing at #EURO2016:
"I don't pick my team around what supporters sing at games"

To the disappointment of everybody, the forward never got any playing time though it didn't stop the chant from being sung. The Irish faithful's weren't too happy with the comments, who took to Twitter to voice their frustration:
@RobHarris @WillGrigg nah just picks 3 strikers over him who combined didnt have as many goals as him this season. baffling.

So you'll just stick with scoring 0 goals and having the fewest shots of any team in the tournament then? Great.

@RobHarris @WillGrigg Considering he's scored more goals than all three strikers who came on combined :see_no_evil:

@RobHarris @WillGrigg It's like he didn't bring him on to spite them, though. No appearances whatsoever is bizarre.
