It is being reported that former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained as part of an investigation into the awarding of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Qatar was named as the hosts in 2010 but controversy has surrounded the decision, with allegations of corruption being raised.

French publication Mediapart claim Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning

Platini was banned from all footballing activity after receiving and accepting a payment from Sepp Blatter.

And last year, he claimed that the France 1998 World Cup was fixed:

"When we organised the calendar, we did a little trickery. If we finished first in the group and Brazil finished first, we could not meet before the final." he said.

"We did not get bored for six years to organise the World Cup to not do some little shenanigans.

"You think that the others did not do it for their World Cup France-Brazil in the final, it was the dream of everyone."

Platini is currently being held at a police station in Nanterres, Paris.
